Contemporary Master Bedroom Redesign

This Central Florida master bedroom has not been updated in years. The room was dominated by a large floral comforter set in sage green and pink on a brass metal bed frame, with a matching bed skirt and coordinating accent pillows. Beige wall-to-wall carpet covered the floor, sheer gathered curtains hung over horizontal blinds, and a gold-framed traditional print sat above the headboard. A tan swivel armchair and a brass table lamp completed the look. Nothing was damaged — it was all simply from another era. The homeowners wanted a master bedroom redesign that would make the space feel calm, current, and less visually busy.

What we did

Marilou Stones approached this redesign as a full surface-and-furnishing reset. The beige carpet was removed and replaced with warm-toned wood-look plank flooring that immediately changed the character of the room, grounding it with natural texture instead of softness. The bed was replaced entirely — a white upholstered platform bed with a clean wingback headboard became the new centerpiece, dressed in simple white and cream bedding with soft blue-grey patterned accent cushions. The bed skirt, floral layers, and brass frame were all gone.

On either side of the bed, we placed natural oak nightstands topped with white textured cylindrical table lamps — a material shift from the old brass-and-fabric combination that fits the room’s new direction. Above the headboard, the gold-framed traditional print was replaced with a large abstract canvas in soft teal, cream, and gold leaf tones that introduce color without pattern. The sheer curtains were removed entirely; the windows now have clean white blinds only, letting in natural light without visual clutter. An abstract area rug in grey, cream, and blush tones sits under the bed, adding texture to the wood floor without competing with anything above it. In the window corner, a cream upholstered accent chair with a slim black metal frame replaced the old tan swivel armchair — a lighter, more intentional seating piece.

The result

The master bedroom now reads as a quiet, contemporary space with a clear visual hierarchy: the upholstered bed anchors the room; the abstract art draws the eye, and everything else supports rather than competes. The palette — white, cream, warm oak, and soft blue grey — creates a sense of calm that the old floral layers never allowed. The wood flooring gives the room warmth without the dated feel of carpet, and the simplified window treatment lets the natural light do its work. This is the kind of interior design project in Central Florida where every piece was replaced, but the room did not need to be rebuilt — just rethought. Frequently Asked Questions

Is an upholstered bed frame practical for a Florida bedroom?

Yes, provided you choose the right fabric. We recommend performance fabrics or tightly woven linen blends that resist moisture and are easy to spot-clean. The white upholstered platform bed in this project uses a durable fabric that holds up well in Central Florida’s climate. Marilou selects upholstery based on the room’s use and the homeowner’s lifestyle, not just the look.

The key is replacing patterns and clutter with texture and quality. In this project, we removed the floral bedding, brass frame, and sheer curtains but introduced warm wood flooring, a textured area rug, cylindrical textured lamps, and an abstract canvas with soft color. The room has fewer elements than before, but each one carries more visual weight, so it feels calm rather than bare.

We often recommend it, especially in Central Florida where humidity can affect carpet over time. Wood-look plank flooring — whether engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl — is easier to maintain and gives the room a warmer, more modern foundation. Adding an area rug under and around the bed keeps the softness underfoot where you want it without the drawbacks of wall-to-wall carpet.

A bedroom redesign of this scope — flooring replacement, new furniture, lighting, art, window treatments, and styling — typically takes three to five weeks from design approval. Flooring installation is usually the first step, followed by furniture delivery and final styling. We coordinate all deliveries and trades, so the room comes together in a single final stage.

We look for pieces that introduce color softly rather than through heavy contrast. The abstract canvas in this project brings in teal, cream, and gold leaf — colors that echo the accent cushions and the warm wood tones without demanding attention. Marilou recommends choosing art after the bedding and flooring are selected, so the palette builds naturally rather than forcing a match.
